The bride's veil was introduced by the Romans to protect the young woman from the "evil eye" of a disappointed suitor.
      
The wedding ring (the real), generally used in Christian weddings since the ninth century, actually dates back to the ancient Egyptians and was placed on the bride's ring finger because it was believed that a vein in that finger to pass that went directly to the heart.
